Travel Guard

One of the very first decisions you will need to make when booking your cruise is whether or not you want to protect your investment with Cruise Travel Insurance. Depending on the policy, Cruise Travel Insurance will cover any number of contingencies that can harm or ruin your cruise vacation. Examples of problems that may be covered are:

  • Trip cancellation, interruption and delay
  • Emergency medical treatment or evacuation
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage or travel documents
  • Baggage delay
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment

This simply means that if you have to cancel your trip because of sickness or death of a covered person, your investment will be covered. In addition, if delay causes problems with embarking on your cruise, you will have coverage. It is important to carefully read and understand your Cruise Travel Insurance policy so that you are completely clear on what it does--and does not--cover. Depending on the policy offered, there can be more or less coverage available, so it is important to determine precisely what the limits of the policy are.

Where can Cruise Travel Insurance be purchased?

Your travel agency--whether local or online--will most likely be able to offer you Cruise Travel Insurance when you make your initial deposit for the cruise. Although you can generally purchase a policy right up until the time of final payment, coverages may differ when purchased after the initial deposit has been made. If you are looking to save time, there are resources online which can handle the policy purchase, with the price based on the total cost of the cruise vacation.

Should you purchase cruise travel insurance?
Like any insurance, the purchase of decline of cruise travel insurance is a gamble. If you have to cancel a cruise because of a medical problem or emergency, our loss could be the amount of the original deposit (sometimes $1000 or more), 50% of the total cost of the cruise or even a full 100% of the cruise fare. The amount forfeited would depend on how close to the sail date the cancellation took place. Compare the cost of the policy versus the potential loss to determine whether or not this is a gamble to want to undertake.
