Unless
the cruise you have booked leaves from your home town, you will need to find a way to get to the ship! For many
cruisers, this means flying to the port of embarkation. It is fairly common for cruise lines to arrange air/sea
packages where both the price of the cruise and the price of air transportation is included. You will want to compare both the price that the cruise line computes for the air portion as well as what you can get the airfare for on your own. Sometimes the cruise line air will be the better value, while at other times you can do much better on your own. Once you have a quote for the air/sea package, do some comparisons to see which option best suits your budget. Advantages of booking on your own: Price may be less than the cruise line. You have the ability to choose your own flights and times. Disadvantages of booking on your own: If your flight is delayed, you are on your own. If you miss the ship, it is your responsibility to get to the next port of call. Advantages of booking with the cruise line: If the flight is delayed and the ship leaves before you have arrived, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port. Disadvantages of booking with the cruise line: You are at their mercy as to flight times, schedules and itineraries. You may be "taking the long way around" to get from your home to the port of embarkation.
